Every Trinidad employee deserves to go home safe. Even the most “minor” safety incident is one incident too many – that’s why we do everything we can to continue building our safety culture, including busting safety myths.
There are a lot of safety myths out there – and we’ve heard them all. One of the best ways to improve safety is to make decisions based on the data and facts, not myths.
To help us sort fact from fiction, we talked to Derek Hibbard, Trinidad’s General Manager, Global HSE. Keep reading to get Derek’s take on seven of the biggest safety myths.
The last 18 months have been hectic. Coming off the worst recession in our history and trying to rebuild on the fly has definitely posed some challenges.
We have had to simultaneously juggle rig upgrades, address personnel, service shortages, and train hundreds of new Trinidad hands while doing everything we can to keep our best people from pursuing other opportunities in the industry. At the end of the day, none of this is new, just the latest iteration of the madness that reflects the cyclical nature of our business.
So the challenge is, and will continue to be, how do we develop and maintain a world-class safety culture amidst all of the chaos and continual noise?
According to U.S. Tornadoes, an average of 1,224 tornadoes touch down each year across the United States. With Texas being the hottest spot for twister activity, and the majority of our U.S. rig fleet drilling there, tornado safety is always on our radar.
HSE Field Coordinator, Alex Cavazos, has been preparing rig crews for severe weather for the last five years. A native of Texas, Alex understands the affects severe weather can have on a worksite.
“As with any safety-sensitive situation, the best way to handle severe weather is to be proactive and well-prepared,” explained Alex.

Our overall utilization rate rose quickly in 2017. Although it was an exciting time for everyone at Trinidad, firing up as many rigs as we did this year after the downturn had its safety challenges.
“Bringing previous employees up-to-speed after some time away from the rigs, and hiring new hands that weren’t familiar with Trinidad’s safety standards were two of our biggest challenges this year,” said Derek Hibbard, our General Manager of Global HSE.

It’s no secret that working on a drilling rig involves labour-intensive work – often performed in extreme conditions. That’s why new rig hands have to be deemed “fit-for-duty” before they head out to the field to ensure they can handle the physical and mental requirements of their assigned job. To be rig-ready, they need to pass both a drug and alcohol test, and a physical evaluation.

This is the first post in our two-part series on pre-employment testing in our US division.
It’s as simple as this: there’s no place for substance abuse on a drilling rig. That’s why every rig hand that receives an employment offer with Trinidad has to pass a mandatory drug and alcohol test prior to hitting the field.
“Trinidad has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse,” explained Amanda Vaught, HR Supervisor based out of our Houston, Texas office. “We work endlessly to ensure our crews go home in the same shape they came to work in and confirming they’re fit-for-duty is a crucial step in making sure that happens.”
