It’s no secret that working on a drilling rig involves labour-intensive work – often performed in extreme conditions. That’s why new rig hands have to be deemed “fit-for-duty” before they head out to the field to ensure they can handle the physical and mental requirements of their assigned job. To be rig-ready, they need to pass both a drug and alcohol test, and a physical evaluation.

It’s as simple as this: there’s no place for substance abuse on a drilling rig. That’s why every rig hand that receives an employment offer with Trinidad has to pass a mandatory drug and alcohol test prior to hitting the field.
“Trinidad has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse,” explained Amanda Vaught, HR Supervisor based out of our Houston, Texas office. “We work endlessly to ensure our crews go home in the same shape they came to work in and confirming they’re fit-for-duty is a crucial step in making sure that happens.”

1. Safety is the engine to our performance and you hold the key
Bennie McFerran is one of the newest guys on Trinidad Rig 123, currently drilling in Reeves County, Texas. Admittedly a bit nervous to start with a new company in November of last year, McFerran’s nerves were quickly put aside when he found out the crew he was joining was coming up on eight years without a recordable incident.
“I’d heard Trinidad was a good company to work for and knew they had nice rigs, but I didn’t know how great the company was until I started. Safety records like this are something special,” said McFerran.

Used to promote a proactive approach to prevent incidents on Trinidad’s drilling rigs, the triangle was designed on the knowledge that 97% of safety incidents are caused by at-risk behaviours and conditions.

A few weeks ago, we spoke with John Meckert about his thirty-year career in the industry and how a few key moments changed his perspective on safety forever. This week, Meckert explains how he and his team helped Trinidad hit its lowest company-wide total recordable incident rate (TRIR)* in 21 years.
“In 2016, Trinidad achieved a TRIR of 0.75,” said Meckert, Trinidad’s Vice President of HSE and QMS. “Meaning we had fewer recordable incidents than ever on our rigs.”

Rig safety has come a long way over the last 30 years. Just ask John Meckert, Trinidad’s Vice President of HSE and QMS, whose years of experience in the industry have given him another level of respect for helping rig hands get home safely.
A professional engineer by trade, Meckert’s interest in safety began at the start of his career while working for Conoco, who at the time was owned by the industrial safety leader and STOP program founder, DuPont.
“Thirty years ago, if you looked at the past few decades’ safety statistics and safety culture, you couldn’t find a better company. I was fortunate to learn the ropes from them so early on.” Continue reading
When it comes to managing a clean rig, Rig Manager Tracy Stewart runs a pretty tight ship. If you were to do a dust check on Rig 127 in Saudi Arabia, we’re willing to bet the results would impress you. Admittedly, if you were to do a dust check at Stewart’s home, the results may vary (but that’s beside the point).
Ask anyone that’s worked at Trinidad, and they’ll tell you performance is the name of our game. It’s part of everything we do, from designing our rigs, to training our crews and maintaining our equipment. In our pursuit of performance, you’d be surprised at the role a soapy scrub brush, a pressure washer, and a little elbow grease can play. Continue reading

Programs like Trinidad’s Reliability Triangle and T.E.S.T. play instrumental roles in building the foundations for a safe rig, but rigs like 136 with significant safety milestones seem to have a little something extra working in their favour; friendships that go beyond the rig floor.
