Our overall utilization rate rose quickly in 2017. Although it was an exciting time for everyone at Trinidad, firing up as many rigs as we did this year after the downturn had its safety challenges.
“Bringing previous employees up-to-speed after some time away from the rigs, and hiring new hands that weren’t familiar with Trinidad’s safety standards were two of our biggest challenges this year,” said Derek Hibbard, our General Manager of Global HSE.
Thanks to the direction of Derek and his team, 2017 was another impressive year in safety, even with a rapid rise in rig activity.

This is the second post in our two-part series on pre-employment testing in Trinidad’s US division.
It’s no secret that working on a drilling rig involves labour-intensive work – often performed in extreme conditions. That’s why new rig hands have to be deemed “fit-for-duty” before they head out to the field to ensure they can handle the physical and mental requirements of their assigned job. To be rig-ready, they need to pass both a drug and alcohol test, and a physical evaluation.

It’s as simple as this: there’s no place for substance abuse on a drilling rig. That’s why every rig hand that receives an employment offer with Trinidad has to pass a mandatory drug and alcohol test prior to hitting the field.
“Trinidad has a zero-tolerance policy for substance abuse,” explained Amanda Vaught, HR Supervisor based out of our Houston, Texas office. “We work endlessly to ensure our crews go home in the same shape they came to work in and confirming they’re fit-for-duty is a crucial step in making sure that happens.”

1. Safety is the engine to our performance and you hold the key
Bennie McFerran is one of the newest guys on Trinidad Rig 123, currently drilling in Reeves County, Texas. Admittedly a bit nervous to start with a new company in November of last year, McFerran’s nerves were quickly put aside when he found out the crew he was joining was coming up on eight years without a recordable incident.
“I’d heard Trinidad was a good company to work for and knew they had nice rigs, but I didn’t know how great the company was until I started. Safety records like this are something special,” said McFerran.

By promoting our proactive safety culture, Trinidad reached its lowest company-wide TRIR in history, meaning more of our rig hands went home safely in 2016 than ever before.

A few weeks ago, we spoke with John Meckert about his thirty-year career in the industry and how a few key moments changed his perspective on safety forever. This week, Meckert explains how he and his team helped Trinidad hit its lowest company-wide total recordable incident rate (TRIR)* in 21 years.
“In 2016, Trinidad achieved a TRIR of 0.75,” said Meckert, Trinidad’s Vice President of HSE and QMS. “Meaning we had fewer recordable incidents than ever on our rigs.”
Driving Trinidad’s safety record to all-time lows
Down from a rate of over one in 2015, Meckert believes our 2016 TRIR is a reflection of how well Trinidad’s proactive safety efforts are working. It is also a reflection of the company’s safety culture. Continue reading
