For a guy who had never traveled outside of Canada or been on an airplane prior to his first hitch in Mexico in 2008, he was quick to take to the international drilling scene.

“Going international was the best career move I’ve made,” said Ben, who is currently a Senior Rig Manager in charge of Rig 601 in Bahrain.

“It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s definitely been worth it.” Continue reading

This week on the blog, we’re taking a look at Trinidad Rig 601, the 2,000 HP desert driller destined for Bahrain in early 2018.

Originally designed to drill in the Ghawar oilfield in Saudi Arabia, this four-year-old Trinidad-built rig boasts a quick tear down and rig up design. It’s also equipped with our integrated control system and RigMinder technology platform for added efficiency, safety and performance.

4 steps we took to ensure safety success when rig counts spiked in 2017

Our overall utilization rate rose quickly in 2017. Although it was an exciting time for everyone at Trinidad, firing up as many rigs as we did this year after the downturn had its safety challenges.

“Bringing previous employees up-to-speed after some time away from the rigs, and hiring new hands that weren’t familiar with Trinidad’s safety standards were two of our biggest challenges this year,” said Derek Hibbard, our General Manager of Global HSE.

Thanks to the direction of Derek and his team, 2017 was another impressive year in safety, even with a rapid rise in rig activity.

Here are four steps we took to ensure safety success when rig counts spiked in 2017: Continue reading

Gearing up for ISO 9001: 2015 certification in Saudi

From the design of our drilling rigs to the safety of our people, we take a lot of pride in the quality of our work at Trinidad – right down to the last detail.

Chris Willoughby, our Quality Management System (QMS) Manager, spends his days focused on these details. One of the ways he’s making sure this quality travels with us as we expand into new countries is ensuring Trinidad’s QMS complies with globally-recognized standards.

“Conforming with ISO 9001: 2015 standards in our Saudi Arabia division is huge for us,” said Willoughby. “Not only does it give Trinidad a competitive edge in the Middle East, but it helps keep up the operational excellence Trinidad is known for in North America.”

Trinidad Drilling reaches its lowest company-wide TRIR in history

Trinidad reaches its lowest company-wide TRIR in history

A few weeks ago, we spoke with John Meckert about his thirty-year career in the industry and how a few key moments changed his perspective on safety forever. This week, Meckert explains how he and his team helped Trinidad hit its lowest company-wide total recordable incident rate (TRIR)* in 21 years.

“In 2016, Trinidad achieved a TRIR of 0.75,” said Meckert, Trinidad’s Vice President of HSE and QMS. “Meaning we had fewer recordable incidents than ever on our rigs.”

Driving Trinidad’s safety record to all-time lows

Down from a rate of over one in 2015, Meckert believes our 2016 TRIR is a reflection of how well Trinidad’s proactive safety efforts are working. It is also a reflection of the company’s safety culture. Continue reading

What’s coming down the talent pipeline in Saudi Arabia

Whether it be at home or overseas, we work hard to invest in the communities we drill in to ensure they’re better off as a result of us being there. One of the ways we’re doing this is by hiring, developing, and mentoring local talent on our drilling rigs through Trinidad Essential Skills Training (T.E.S.T.).

T.E.S.T. is our competency-assurance program that defines global performance standards for each position on our rigs (Floorhand, Motorhand, Derrickhand and Driller). Every rig hand that steps foot into Trinidad coveralls is assessed on these standards to ensure they can perform the skills required for their position. Continue reading
